This workshop introduces participants to strategies for planning and conducting various types of case-based learning in small groups. The workshop begins with the participants experiencing a case in PBL (problem-based learning). After a debriefing of the PBL case including the students' roles and the facilitator's responsibilities, participants review several case formats including paperback (multiple page, progressive disclosure) and snapshot (one page) cases. Participants learn protocols and receive templates for writing cases in both formats. Working in teams, participants write a case during the workshop and try out the case with other participants. A checklist that provides guidelines for effective facilitation of small group conferences is discussed, and participants use the checklist to critique a small group facilitator in action.
