Faculty Development Workshops

Best Practices for Evaluating Student Performance
Workshop

Duration

4-8 hours (half-day or full day)

Synopsis

During this workshop, participants review factors that hinder and enhance the accuracy of learner evaluations with special focus on variables that contribute to false positives, i.e., where students are judged to be competent when in reality they are actually not competent. Participants review and discuss ten "best practices" for assessing learner competence. Participants then assess the degree to which their program uses the ten evaluation best practices in their system to assess learners' performance. New strategies for assessing learner attainment of competency or desired educational objectives are reviewed and demonstrated; these include portfolios and several types of OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Evaluations).

Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the concepts of false positive and false negative as they relate to performance evaluation.
  • Describe factors that produce inaccurate evaluations in health professions education.
  • Discuss evaluation best practices that are likely to improve the accuracy of learner evaluations.
  • Participate in an evaluation exercise to apply the concepts introduced in this workshop to the task of grading the performance of two students in the clinic.
  • Assess their department's system for evaluating students' performance using a best practices checklist.
  • Describe research on the validity and reliability of various types of evaluation methods.
