Competency-Based Education:
What Is It, and How Is It Different?
Workshop

Duration

6 hours (full day or two half-days)

Synopsis

This workshop introduces the concept of competency-based education (CBE) and demonstrates a process for planning a curriculum based on CBE principles. Participants discuss the question “what is competence?” and describe the capacities and attributes of a competent practitioner in their discipline. The planning process and format of CBE are compared to the traditional, discipline-based model of education. Participants review an example of a CBE curriculum and then learn a step-by-step process for planning CBE. The C-E-O (competency & educational outcome) format for writing competency statements is introduced, and participant teams use this format to practice writing competencies. Strategies for evaluation of student performance in CBE are introduced, after which participants work in teams to design an evaluation plan to measure students’ attainment of designated competencies. Implementation techniques for CBE and typical problems and barriers are discussed.
