Faculty Development Workshops

Educational Research Methods (ERM)
Course

Duration

Nine two-hour workshops (18 hours total). This course can be conducted in other formats as well, including six half-day programs.

Synopsis

The Educational Research Methods (ERM) course introduces participants to strategies for designing studies that explore curriculum, teaching, and learning issues. ERM consists of nine 2-hour workshops that guide participants from initial identification of research questions and hypothesis formulation to study design and then data analysis covering both quantitative and qualitative methods. The ERM course also helps participants work through obstacles that are typically encountered when conducting educational research.

Research Project

Participants will plan an educational research project during the course. ERM participants receive individualized consultation and assistance from AAL staff outside of the scheduled workshops.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Conduct a W-H-I-F analysis to identify research issues related to curriculum, teaching strategies, learning environment, and assessment methods in their discipline.
  • Describe a five-step process for designing educational research studies.
  • Write research questions in the P-I-C-O format.
  • Compare and contrast quantitative and qualitative research, and describe outcome measures typically used in each type of research.
  • Identify commonly used statistical techniques that are appropriate for analysis of data given specified research objectives and/or hypotheses.
  • Recognize commonly used parametric and non-parametric strategies and techniques for analysis of data.
  • Describe data collection and data analysis techniques used in qualitative research studies.
  • Recognize common sources of data contamination in educational research and other typically encountered problems in this type of research.
  • Identify best practices for designing surveys.
  • Present their research plan to other participants in the ERM course and receive feedback.
