Providing Constructive Feedback
Workshop

Duration

3 hours (half-day)

Synopsis

Workshop participants begin the program by reviewing strategies for providing constructive, helpful feedback that "connects" with the recipient without triggering dysfunctional defensiveness. Participants observe a videotape of an instructor providing feedback to a student and critique this interaction guided by a checklist. Participants then work in small groups to practice providing two types of feedback: 1) to a learner (student or resident) in relation to their academic performance, and 2) to a peer/colleague in relation to a manuscript. Two group members role-play the scenario while others observe and provide feedback guided by a list of feedback best practices. Case materials are provided to assist participants in role-playing these feedback situations.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

- Identify the characteristics of effective and dysfunctional
  feedback.

- Use feedback strategies to guide/counsel either a
  student/resident or a peer (colleague) in a role-play scenario
and self-assess application of feedback techniques.

- Describe types of feedback messages that are likely to
  stimulate a defensive reaction.

- Discuss strategies that can be used to reduce a student's or a
  colleague's defensive barriers.
