Teaching Effectively in the Classroom
Workshop

Duration

6 hours (full day)

Synopsis

This workshop is designed to help teachers "get more bang for their buck" in the classroom. Participants begin the workshop by critiquing a lecture presented by the session leader. Following discussion of the strengths and limitations of this demonstration lecture, participants learn seven strategies that enhance learning from lectures. Participants then utilize guidelines presented during the workshop to present a 10-minute mini-lecture on a topic of their own choice. Participants are divided into teams of four to five members. Team members take turns presenting their mini-lectures. Other team members observe and provide feedback on such aspects of the presentation as clarity, organization, visual materials, and delivery style (voice, rate of speech, mannerisms, gesturing). Depending on the facilities, the mini-lectures can be videotaped for review and self-assessment by the presenter. Strategies for using PowerPoints to enhance rather than detract from learning are also demonstrated, and participants critique a PowerPoint presentation to identify effective and ineffective techniques.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

-         Identify factors and techniques that are associated with high-quality classroom lectures.

-         Critique a lecture and identify teacher behavior and methods that promoted learning and factors that hindered learning.

-         Describe techniques that can be employed by a lecturer to gain student attention during the first few minutes of the lecture.

-         Plan and present a 10-minute mini-lecture and receive feedback from peers.

-         Identify teacher techniques that have consistently been associated with higher levels of student learning in lecture-based courses (e.g., strategies that produce higher than normal levels of retention).

-         Recommend best practices for designing and using PowerPoints in classroom presentations.
