Intellectual Renaissance Programs

AAL fosters a commitment to life-long learning by providing programs and retreats that bring together a diverse group of scholars, entrepreneurs, artists, corporate executives, and intellectuals who are interested in pursuing intellectual growth and stimulation.

Athena Society—the Athena Society is designed to lead individuals to fully experience what Aristotle calls “the good life.” In themed immersion events held over several days at prime locations around the world, Athena Society Fellows engage with internationally recognized leaders, change agents, and people of influence. Through background readings, presentations, deep discussion, and continuing dialogue, participants examine the fundamental concepts for a good life and prepare themselves to live creatively and professionally. Fellows include executives, health care professionals, entrepreneurs, university faculty and administrators, attorneys, artists, writers, and others who share the love of intellectual enlightenment.

Meaning of Work Seminar—the Meaning of Work Seminar is designed to give busy professionals the opportunity to reflect on life’s most important questions; namely, what is the meaning of happiness? What makes life successful? What is the relationship of happiness to work and other dimensions of human life? Since, for most people, work occupies a significant amount of time each day and each week, the seminar assists participants in gaining perspective on one’s work in the context of a good life. Building on ideas from history’s greatest thinkers, participants consider various dimensions of life, individual purpose, values, and the importance of habits in leading a good life. Participants leave with an action plan to revitalize their work and leisure time.

Whole Life Retirement Planning—due to the huge increase in the number of retirees, especially in the professions where AAL practices, and the desire to find ways to harness the enormous amount of intellectual horsepower in retired individuals. AAL identified a need to provide guidance and direction to individuals to help them maximize their retirement experience. Most retirement plans limit the planning horizon to financial matters, the AAL approach deals with the whole life considerations that a retiree must consider in developing a more comprehensive retirement plan. The intent is to provide a framework for helping retirees to determine what they want and need to do in retirement to achieve true happiness and personal fulfillment.
