This means that it’s time to dust off some of the leading meetings skills that are part of the Communicate effectively across multiple domains academic leadership competency.
Let’s take a look at how an Academic Leader might prepare to flex this competency, whether it’s leading a department’s curriculum night, a whole grade level gathering, or an all-school kickoff meeting. No matter the size and makeup of the gathering, your first step is to start with why. Why are you gathering? If you just needed parents to know something, you’d send an email, or maybe a video. So, find the genuine answer to the question of why you are asking this group of parents to gather together in a space. If the purpose is not just to impart information, and it certainly shouldn’t be just that, what is it that you need to accomplish? Perhaps you’re seeking to build relationships and teamwork or even address the emotional needs of the community. Clarifying the why, possibly during a conversation with your peers or the leadership team will help you plan effectively.
