McKinsey & Company’s March 2022 report identifies education as one of the top four sectors most affected by resignations. Academic Leaders agree–faculty retention and recruitment are their top concern right now.
As we’re building our professional learning for academic leaders, one of our focuses is on helping you build more supportive professional relationships with the individuals who report to you. One resource we’re drawing on is this report from McKinsey that identifies education as one of the top four sectors most affected by increased departures. Survey results indicate that the top three reasons people leave a job without another in hand are "uncaring leaders," "unsustainable work performance expectations," and “lack of career development and advancement potential.” The top concern cited by those departing is related to an essential Academic Leadership competency: Build and Support Trusting Relationships. When teachers know that academic leaders care about their well-being, they feel more satisfied with their work. The disconnect between teachers and leaders has been cited in numerous studies as key to faculty retention. One excellent resource on the topic is this research report published in EdWeek.
