Leading from the Middle: What to Expect (and Where to Start)
July 20 - July 24
Course Description
Stepping into a leadership role, particularly one that involves supervising people who were once peers, can be both exciting and challenging. This course is designed for educators in the early years of middle-leadership roles, such as department chairs, instructional coaches, or assistant division heads. Participants will learn how to approach their leadership with clarity, intention, and confidence.
Participants will explore strategies for understanding what they have been hired to accomplish, identifying the risks and opportunities in their role, and quickly building the knowledge they need to succeed as leaders. The course will also address one of the most delicate aspects of moving into leadership: navigating the shift from colleague to supervisor. Leaders will learn practical approaches such as structuring effective one-on-one meetings with direct reports.
In addition, participants will examine their school’s mission, values, and guiding documents through the lens of their leadership responsibilities and consider how to build strong relationships with peers, senior leaders, and a network of support beyond their school.
By the end of the course, participants will have practical strategies for navigating the challenges of middle leadership and a clearer plan for succeeding in their role.
