Department chairs play a critical role in schools, yet the role is often shaped more by tradition than intention. In this session, we’ll share a preview of a forthcoming research report from the Association for Academic Leaders, grounded in original interviews with more than 60 academic leaders and informed by management research on middle leadership. Together, we’ll explore how schools are defining, structuring, and supporting the role and where common misalignments emerge.
